Wild Glamping Gal Oya – Thema Collection Wins Silver at the Presidential Environment Awards 2026

Sri Lanka’s nature retreat in Rathugala earns national recognition for its commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation

Wild Glamping Gal Oya by Thema Collection has been honoured with the Silver Award at the Presidential Environment Awards 2026, held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo. Organised by the Central Environmental Authority under the Ministry of Environment, the awards are Sri Lanka’s foremost national recognition for excellence in environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The award, presented under the patronage of the President of Sri Lanka, recognises institutions and enterprises that go beyond conventional practice to protect the island’s natural environment. For Wild Glamping Gal Oya, it affirms a model of hospitality in which conservation, community and comfort are designed to work together.

Set in the village of Rathugala, on the edge of Gal Oya National Park in the Uva Province, the retreat comprises 20 grass-roofed tents built by the indigenous community using locally sourced, eco-friendly materials. Conceived by Thema Collection Chairman Chandra Wickramasinghe and developed during the pandemic, the property was planned from the outset as a low-impact, village-style camp that sits lightly on the land.

The Silver Award adds to a growing list of honours for the property, including the Outstanding Sustainable Concept Award, the Green Destinations Good Travel Seal, ICRT Indian Subcontinent Awards 2026 Regenerative Tourism Category – GOLD, Presidential Environment Awards 2024 – Bronze and three awards at the SLTC Research and Innovation Awards 2025 for environment and sustainability research, inclusive growth and research and development.

“This award belongs to our team and the Rathugala community, who have been an integral part of building Wild Glamping Gal Oya. From the beginning, our vision was to demonstrate how tourism can support environmental conservation, create opportunities for local communities, and protect the natural and cultural heritage that makes this destination unique. This national recognition encourages us to continue strengthening our commitment to responsible tourism,” said Chandra Wickramasinghe, Chairman of Thema Collection

The recognition comes as travellers increasingly seek meaningful, responsible journeys. Wild Glamping Gal Oya offers just that: a chance to experience Sri Lanka’s wild east and its oldest living culture, with a footprint designed to leave both stronger.
