Hilton Yala Resort is inviting young explorers to discover the wonders of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage through its immersive Junior Ranger Program—an educational wildlife experience designed to inspire curiosity, environmental stewardship, and a lifelong appreciation for nature among children.
Set against the extraordinary backdrop of Yala National Park, Hilton’s only wildlife resort globally offers children aged 5 to 12 the opportunity to step into the shoes of a wildlife ranger. Guided by the resort’s experienced ranger team, the program combines hands-on learning with outdoor exploration, introducing participants to the remarkable biodiversity, ecosystems, archaeology, history, and conservation efforts that make Yala one of the world’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.
What sets the Junior Ranger Program apart is its integration with the internationally recognised CyberTracker Conservation assessment methodology. Hilton Yala Resort is proud to be the only resort in Sri Lanka offering young participants the opportunity to work towards CyberTracker Junior Tracker certification, a globally respected wildlife tracking accreditation used by conservationists, wildlife guides, researchers and protected area managers around the world.
Designed specifically for children, the CyberTracker Junior Tracker certification encourages observation, critical thinking, exploration and scientific reasoning through practical outdoor learning rather than classroom instruction. Young participants are assessed through engaging field activities and simple tracking exercises that reward curiosity and understanding while building confidence in nature interpretation. Rather than focusing solely on correct answers, the assessment encourages children to observe, discuss, reason and learn from the environment around them.
Available as one-day and two-day experiences, the Junior Ranger Program takes children beyond traditional holiday activities through guided nature walks, wildlife observation, bush skills, animal tracking, archaeology experiences, biodiversity identification, conservation learning and interactive educational sessions that foster teamwork, confidence and environmental awareness. Participants successfully completing the program receive their Junior Ranger recognition together with the opportunity to achieve internationally recognised CyberTracker certification appropriate to their level.
The initiative reflects Hilton’s global Travel with Purpose strategy, which focuses on creating meaningful guest experiences while strengthening local communities, promoting environmental stewardship and inspiring responsible travel. Through experiences such as the Junior Ranger Program, Hilton continues to connect guests with destinations in ways that create lasting positive impact for both people and nature.
“Children have an incredible natural curiosity about the world around them. When they are given the opportunity to explore the wilderness firsthand, they begin to understand that every species plays a vital role within an ecosystem,” said Sajith Withanage, Head Ranger at Hilton Yala Resort. “By incorporating the internationally recognised CyberTracker methodology into our Junior Ranger Program, we’re giving children more than an unforgettable holiday activity. We’re encouraging them to observe, question, think critically and truly connect with nature through the same principles used by wildlife professionals around the world. We hope every child leaves not only with wonderful memories, but with a genuine passion for protecting wildlife for future generations.”
The CyberTracker learning process places emphasis on curiosity, exploration, peer discussion and scientific observation, making it an ideal complement to Hilton Yala Resort’s conservation-led experiences. Rather than measuring success by memorisation alone, children are encouraged to engage directly with the natural environment while developing valuable outdoor skills that can inspire a lifelong appreciation for wildlife.
“Families today are increasingly seeking holidays that create meaningful memories while allowing children to learn through authentic experiences,” said Sanoj Perera, Director of Marketing & Communication at Hilton Yala Resort. “Our Junior Ranger Program perfectly embodies this vision by combining adventure, education and conservation in one unforgettable experience. Being the only resort in Sri Lanka to offer access to internationally recognised CyberTracker certification further reinforces Hilton Yala Resort’s commitment to creating experiences with purpose. Through Hilton’s Travel with Purpose strategy, we are proud to inspire the next generation to appreciate, understand and protect Sri Lanka’s extraordinary biodiversity.”
Surrounded by pristine wilderness and the Indian Ocean, Hilton Yala Resort continues to redefine family travel by offering immersive experiences that celebrate Sri Lanka’s natural heritage while encouraging responsible tourism, conservation education and meaningful connections with the destination.
