Culture came alive on the shores of Pasikuda as Browns Hotels & Resorts presented the Calm Culture Collective at The Calm Resort & Spa an immersive evening that celebrated the traditions, flavours, artistry and stories that make Sri Lanka truly unique.
Created as an experience beyond the traditional resort stay, the Calm Culture Collective invited guests to discover another side of the East Coast—one shaped not only by its breathtaking coastline, calm waters and spectacular sunrises, but also by its vibrant communities, heritage and cultural diversity.
Bringing together resort guests, members of the local community, tourism partners, neighbouring hotels and distinguished invitees, the evening transformed The Calm Resort & Spa into a celebration of Sri Lanka’s living heritage. Guests were taken on a journey through Sri Lanka’s diverse cultural traditions, with each performance introduced through insights into its origins, history and cultural significance, allowing audiences to better understand the heritage and stories behind every art form.
The evening featured a captivating showcase of Sri Lanka’s traditional and cultural performances, including the elegance and grandeur of Kandyan Dance, the vibrant rhythms of Thelme (Low Country Dance), the expressive beauty of Bharatha Natyam, the graceful Mayura (Peacock) Dance, the Portuguese-influenced Kapirigna, the colourful Salu Paliya, and the dramatic Mask and Pandam Paaliya rooted in Sri Lanka’s ancient ritual traditions.
One of the highlights of the evening was the reenactment of the Kandy Esala Perahera, bringing the magnificence and spiritual significance of one of Sri Lanka’s most revered cultural festivals to life on stage. Through traditional drumming, movement and storytelling, guests were given insight into the history and symbolism behind this centuries-old celebration.
Adding to the cultural experience was a specially curated East Coast-inspired dining journey featuring authentic flavours and culinary highlights from the region. The dinner buffet showcased Batticaloa and East Coast specialties, offering guests an opportunity to explore the unique tastes and culinary traditions of the area. Complementing the evening was a signature beverage crafted exclusively for the occasion, inspired by the colours, flavours and character of the East Coast.
The celebration also featured local artisans and craftspeople from the region, showcasing traditional arts, handmade creations and cultural expressions while creating a meaningful connection between guests and the communities that continue to preserve these traditions.
The success of the evening was brought to life through the dedication and efforts of Sujeewa Basnayake, General Manager of The Calm Resort & Spa, and the entire resort team, who curated a memorable experience that reflected the warmth, creativity and hospitality of the East Coast.
