British Airways Announces Winter 2026 Expansion with Colombo Among New Long-Haul Destinations

British Airways has announced a significant expansion of its global route network for winter 2026, with the introduction of new long-haul services including flights to Colombo, marking a notable development for Sri Lanka’s international connectivity.

The airline revealed plans to grow its long-haul network by nine percent as part of its winter schedule, adding two new destinations — Colombo and Melbourne — while also increasing capacity on several high-demand leisure routes worldwide. The announcement positions Colombo among a select group of destinations receiving renewed focus from the UK’s flagship carrier.

The addition of Colombo to the airline’s network is expected to strengthen links between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, while also enhancing connectivity to British Airways’ wider global network through its hub at Heathrow Airport. Industry observers note that the move reflects growing international interest in Sri Lanka as a year-round travel destination.

Alongside the new routes, British Airways will also increase winter capacity on several established leisure destinations, including Cape Town, Tokyo Haneda Airport, Bridgetown, Kingston and San José. These additions form part of a broader strategy to expand options for travellers across the airline’s long-haul leisure network.

Neil Chernoff, Chief Planning and Strategy Officer at British Airways, commented: “We’re delighted to announce sizeable growth to our flying schedule for winter 2026, including two notable new destinations that I’m confident will prove popular with our customers. We’re also increasing services across several high-demand routes around the world. Together, these changes represent a significant investment in our long-haul leisure network, adding even more options and choice for our customers.”

In the short term, the airline has also adjusted its schedule in response to developments in the Middle East, adding additional services to key Asian destinations including Bangkok and Singapore to accommodate shifting travel demand.

Meanwhile, British Airways Holidays has reported a surge in customer searches for alternative winter escapes, particularly to Caribbean destinations. Searches for holidays in Antigua have increased by 63 percent, while interest in Gran Canaria has risen by 50 percent.

The expansion signals continued confidence in long-haul leisure travel and highlights Sri Lanka’s growing profile as a destination in global airline networks. The introduction of British Airways services to Colombo is expected to further enhance the country’s accessibility for travellers from the United Kingdom and beyond during the upcoming winter travel season.
