Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, with the country rapidly restoring normalcy and ensuring that traveller experiences remain uninterrupted. While many prospective travellers may presume or wonder whether Sri Lanka is safe after recent international weather reports, the reality on the ground is clear: the island is calm, fully operational, and ready to welcome visitors. As Sri Lanka moves confidently into its peak season, the message is strong and unequivocal—Sri Lanka is open for business and safe for travel.
Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) remains fully operational, with no flight cancellations or rescheduled services. All major expressways and road networks linking the island’s key tourism regions are open, ensuring smooth access to the cultural triangle, southern beaches, hill country, and wildlife hotspots.
While rail connectivity experienced the highest level of disruption, Sri Lanka Railways has already restored significant capacity, with 16 main line services operating from Colombo Fort to Rambukkana, Mahawa, Kurunegala, Ganewatte, and Polgahawela. All major national parks are open to visitors, and tourist attractions across the south and east coasts remain fully operational and accessible.
Reinforcing the sector’s stability, SLAITO President Nalin Jayasuriya highlighted the industry’s strong performance:“A majority of tourism regions remain open, safe, and welcoming to tourists. There has been no hindrance to service levels. We have even welcomed two upmarket cruise ships in recent days and successfully carried out excursions.”
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has recorded over 70,000 tourist arrivals between 1–10 December, signalling that visitors continue to choose Sri Lanka despite global news cycles.
Importantly, a holiday in Sri Lanka contributes far beyond the hotel stay. Every visitor directly supports local communities—tour guides, craftspeople, farmers, drivers, restaurants, and small businesses—all of whom are part of the vibrant ecosystem that sustains the tourism industry. This ripple effect is deeply valuable for families across the nation.
As a country built on resilience and unity, Sri Lanka continues to rise above challenges with strength and determination. The tourism sector remains committed to offering accurate, timely information to ensure travellers can plan with confidence.
Sri Lanka is ready, resilient, and waiting to welcome the world.
