Rail services on Sri Lanka’s scenic Badulla–Ambewela route have resumed following a 23-day suspension caused by adverse weather, restoring a key travel link across the island’s central highlands.

The reopening was marked by a ceremonial inaugural journey departing Badulla at 9.00 a.m., attended by Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Vidyaratne, Deputy Minister of Tourism Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe and railway officials. The first service carried a strong mix of local passengers and international visitors, with multi-faith blessings conducted prior to departure.

Along the route, the train was welcomed at Demodara and Ella before reaching Ambewela destinations popular with travellers exploring Sri Lanka’s upcountry landscapes.

In addition, train operations have also recommenced on the Eastern Railway Line, with a passenger service departing Trincomalee at 7.00 a.m. for Colombo Fort via Gal Oya and Maha Oya, improving cross-country connectivity for travellers.
